The 5 Series - BMW’s fine midsize sedan
March 31, 2008
Candidly, the BMW 5 Series is not the most glitzy or eye-catching glam-car de jour on the road. It is, however, worthy of attention and consideration. This is a down-to-the-bone really fine automobile. The car sells for a premium price, but it’s worth it. The 5 was designed from the ground up as a fine, safe and efficient performance sedan. The 528i model is equipped with a 230-horsepower, 3.0-liter straight-six engine. Though there is a 300-horsepower twin-turbo version of this engine and a 5.0- liter V10 performance variant available, the base engine has ample power. It is offered with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Another one of BMW’s bedrock priorities is safety. BMW was the first company to introduce side curtain/head airbags. Again, passenger safety is not an afterthought but is designed into the vehicle from the very beginning.
